The internet is a vast and all mighty beast with something for everyone. You can find porn with the most innocuous Google search or open your horizons to brave new things from music to recipes and so on. However, it stands to reason, and obviously so, that you can't believe everything you read on the internet... but sometimes it's fun to speculate.
Ever since Lego have been releasing their blind bag minifigures, there have been droves of fake upcoming series announcements, some even convincing. Most fakes were immediately marked as such, but in some cases sparked conversation and even a little controversy.

The extended roster of the Village People?

Destro's head is from a Kre-O Transformer minifigure!
A series heavily speculated and championed by fans was GI Joe. It actually got to the point Lego released a statement to confirm they would never seek the licensing for GI Joe due to the violent nature of the franchise. The irony is not lost that all GI Joe characters are paramount to Stormtroopers in the fact that they can't hit a thing, neither is it lost that Lego have released Star Wars, Ninjas, Knights and so on, all featuring weapons.

A cropped in-store Toys R Us poster for the 2008 Star Wars line.
In 2008 an image was plastered everywhere online boasting a Star Wars Clone Wars minifigure series, but in actuality it was merely an in-store promotional poster for minifigures in the current and upcoming range of Star Wars Lego sets.
|
With Lego Dimensions Scooby-Doo was speculated.
With the release of Lego Dimensions (RIP) more licenses were acquired by Lego, some no one could have anticipated, but with the release of the Scooby-Doo Team Pack so too arose further speculation of a potential minifigure series. However the image was immediate pointed out as fake as Lego had already announced Scooby-Doo sets coming to market.

Whovians collectively Squee'd!
Dimensions also released a Level and Team pack for Dr. Who and with that a fan made checklist started making the rounds and immediately touted as the next minifigure series, in fact it was so well done that it seemed factual and even probable, eventually a set was released as part of the Lego ideas range (fan voted releases) but a minifigure series never came to pass.

Well executed concept, but was never going to happen.
Another well made checklist for Masters of the Universe had already hit the web but not under subterfuge. It was well and clearly stated the image was fan made and was just wishful thinking on the part of the artist. The inclusion of the Mattel logo further dispelled doubt and any still trying to claim the image as anything but conceptual. But you can't help but look at the image and think "How awesome would that be?"

Custom made series became available for purchase.
|
The Custom series even sparked a sequel.
Suddenly a market opened up and custom minifigures became easier and easier to acquire, some sites even offering a pick and mix option so you could create your own custom minifigure. The 'Oh the Horror!' custom series was mostly compiled from readily available Lego pieces, then mass produced and sold online.
