Klaatu Barada NICKTOONS?!

More often now we’re seeing identical releases from various blind box peddlers, so it stands to reason comparisons will often be drawn. When sat side by side, allegiances can be challenged and we find ourselves gravitating to a different manufacturer, other times its price and sometimes it’s all about the aesthetic.

Kidrobot Nick 90's minis series

In 2017 Kidrobot released their Nick 90’s minis series - the characters bore a resemblance to their source material in most cases and the ratios were relatively tame. There were 19 characters to collect with no colour or costume variants and some also coming with accessories. The series found popularity and sold out as fans were able to relive their favourite Nick toon character moments, but at a premium price of between $25-$29 NZD you had to be a diehard fan as for many they were simply priced out.

Funko 90's Nickelodeon Mystery Minis

In 2018 when Funko released their 90’s Nickelodeon Mystery Minis there was suddenly a cheaper option and greater accuracy in appearance. The series featured a whopping 21 characters to collect with 4 case variations and store exclusives, but with the usual Funko ratios several characters were simply unobtainable or particular exclusive cases not readily available locally. The series was also marred by rushed production and some poor quality control in the paint and construction departments, but this series filled a lower price point of $10-$14 NZD in the Nickelodeon blind box market.

The Loyal Subjects Nick Splat

Late to the party The Loyal Subjects released their Nick Splat series in the latter part of 2018 and it was like déjà vu, with several characters reappearing from both the previous releases. The Loyal Subjects included collector cards and accessories and also featured greater articulation than any of  the other company’s releases. With the new windowed box format it made it easier to see who you were getting, unless it was one of the 4 blacked out window boxes in each case. This new format made it a little easier to acquire those harder to get ratios while trying to avoid doubles, and the new price point of $17-$18 NZD put them square in the middle of the other two brands. Overall there were 12 characters to collect and the harder ratios were colour or costume variants which made them less “required” - there were also store exclusives, making some characters harder than others to obtain.
