Funko Science Fiction Classics... Series 3?

Before we start, it should be made abundantly clear, a third series of the Funko Science Fiction Classics mystery minis has not been announced and to our knowledge is not currently in development.

Early on Funko would notoriously release their catalogues with many things to endlessly delight and amass a feverish need and desire for up and coming products, but often, those earlier catalogues, would have those baneful words etched across the bottom of the frame: 'Subject to licensing', or something similar. This happens less and less now, but way back when series one of the Sci-Fi classics were nearing release we got a glimpse of some characters that never came to fruition.

Catalogue series announcement

Sci-Fi Classics Series One back of box

Although series one gave us some fantastic characters, the image above touted the likes of Robot B-9 (Lost in Space), Neo (Matrix), and a Cylon (Battlestar Galactica). Neo and the Cylon made it into series two, but Robot B-9 never eventuated. Instead of those characters we saw a Metallic Alien/Xenomorph, Jayne Cobb and Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly), a clear Predator, and the Rocketeer, none of which are particular upsetting inclusions, but the trend of including characters in the catalogues continued for series two of the Sci-fi classics series.

Series Two catalogue announcement

Sci-Fi Classics Series Two back of box

This time there we saw the exclusion of Doc Brown (Back to the Future), and Godzilla. We also saw a variation on the final sculpt for the Iron Giant. However also missing (which isn't uncommon) were the exclusives for Leeloo with multipass (Fifth Element), and Zoidberg (Futurama). Sadly again we were graced with images for a few characters that never eventuated, a Mangalore (Fifth Element), Gigantor, and Morpheus (Matrix). But where do we go from here?

Horror classic mystery minis got a third series and then a VERY late exclusive case for Walgreens (which helped NO ONE in New Zealand), but as releases seem to increase from Funko as they branch into every possible franchise - the Sci-fi 'franchise' seems to have gone by the wayside. So what of the characters we never got to see? Most were released as Pops, so it stands to reason Funko do have some form of licensing for them, so it's a hope we'll eventually see a much anticipated third series, but who else could fill those ranks?

 Let us speculate/dream:
  • T-800/Terminator

  - It would be fantastic to see a T-800 but with the Terminator franchise changing hands every few years, this is a pipe dream that will likely never eventuate, as licensing would be a nightmare to retain.

  • Big Guy and Rusty

 - A short lived comic book and a fantastic animated series these Frank Millar created icons would also make great additions. Even if Rusty bears heavy similarity to Astro boy - whom Funko appear to have the licensing for, so perhaps he is another potential addition?

  • *The Black Hole
  - NYCC saw Pop! for the Black Hole with VINcent and Maximillian, and both would make fantastic additions to a potential third Sci-Fi series, and since Funko like to milk things, you could add Bob for good measure.

  • ID4

  - The addition of an ID4 Alien, in any shape or form, would also be great. Again Funko have the rights for the Pop!, so perhaps this could be expanded upon. The 'open' chase Alien Pop! would look fantastic as a mini, but with the legs and tentacles, could be hard to pull off.

  • Alien (Franchise)

  - Although already tapped in series one and two of the sci-fi series, films are still being released. We now have the potential for a Neomorph or David as possible inclusions. But for purists, a damaged Bishop, a "bloody" Ash, Acid damaged Hicks, Ripley in the Power-loader, or 'Game over" Hudson would also make interesting additions. The list really does go on.

  • *King of Monsters

  - With a Godzilla in the previous series there are opportunities for many of his foes including Mothra, Mecha-Godzilla, Hedorah and so on... However one that should be included, and is "technically" franchise relevant has to be King Kong. In fact King Kong would have to be a seemingly effortless and required inclusion.

Finally, because this list would never end here are some others worth mentioning for inclusion:

The robots from Silent Running (1972)

Blade Runner - Pris, Deckard, Roy Batty

Modern Cylon Centurion

Aeon Flux (Animated Series - 1991)

War of the Worlds Tripod

The day the Earth stood still - Gort (1951)

Remember, this is all speculation, a wishlist if you will! Inspired by the characters touted but never quite saw the light of day, and some favourites I'd personally love to see included if a third series were to eventuate.
What do you think? Are there any characters you can think of that you'd love to see included if a third series did happen? Comment and tell us your thoughts?
