With the second series of Iron Fist dropping on Netflix just the other day and Funko's uncanny ability to squeeze every penny out of their acquired licensing, I'm left contemplating what if? It seems strange that particular licenses held by Funko haven't been further developed beyond Pop! vinyls. But one series which is seemingly ripe for the picking and adapted to Mystery Minis would have to be the Netflix Marvel shows/universe.
Considering there are now five interweaving series (Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage/Iron Fist/The Punisher) and an additional limited event series (The Defenders) the opportunities are endless. Heck there is even the option to have a little fun with it and include the comic book likenesses of the main core characters in addition.
Even if Funko didn't include the, sometimes flamboyant, comic book iterations of the characters, there is enough diversity with all the interweaving characters to justify not only a standard case, but also exclusive cases. When you think about it, there is so much potential the mind begins to boggle.
Take Daredevil, we know Funko like to do multiple versions of a single character so immediately there are three different versions of the man without fear himself: a Matt Murdock, Masked Vigilante, and Red Suit Daredevil. Then consider including the supporting cast of characters and it's already a completed case with room for exclusive cases.
With Jessica Jones there are less characters which is why it would be wiser to create a series of Mystery Minis rather than a set for each Netflix series. Although with characters like Patsy Walker, there is the opportunity to pre-empt the series and include her alter ego Hellcat, or the unhinged Frank Simpson and his alter ego Nuke.
In the case of Luke Cage there are a wealth of characters, but it's probably not necessary to include everyone, but with so many villains Cottonmouth, Diamondback, Black Mariah, Bushmaster where do you draw the line? Cage's Power Man suit from the brief glance of it we saw in Season One would need to be an inclusion, as would Misty Knight.Although the first season was dire, with poorly choreographed and edited fight sequences, terrible dialogue and laughable acting, the second season (so far) of Iron Fist has made up for the avarice of the creators and their ill conceived mentality that "it's part of the universe - people will watch". But one thing Season One gave us was Colleen Wing and with that the hope we see a Heroes for Hire Netflix series featuring Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, but in any case she would need to be included as a Mystery Mini.
The Punisher series was the first to actually fit the 13 episode mold Netflix put in motion for their Marvel universe, so much so that it didn't feel like there were filler episodes or worse that it dragged. With a second season due out next year it's probable there will be a heavy expansion on the rogues gallery. But worthy inclusions for a Mystery Mini series would have to be Microchip, and probably a Billy Russo and Jigsaw figure at the very least.
The interweaving support characters like Karen Paige, Foggy Nelson, and Claire Temple would be great additions, but probably not necessary. Then again if they were included they could probably work as exclusive case characters. As long as Disney allow Netflix to retain the rights for the characters they currently have (in 2019 licensing lapses and Disney have their own streaming service en route) there are seasons worth of villains and supporting cast which could be expanded further or turned into spin-off series or "limited event" series not unlike the shorter one-off season of The Defenders, and with that the potential for an ongoing Marvel Netflix series of Mystery Minis.
I just wish - since Netflix have already done Daredevil and The Punisher - that they would be licensed to develop more of the Marvel Knights series like Blade, Moonknight and Ghost Rider. Although HIGHLY unlikely, The Thunderbolts.
